Here is a redesign of the drawing machine rendered in Rhino, while I’ve gotten the stepper motors to behave since last quarter and I’ve got a custom TouchOSC interface built so I don’t have to test this with live EEG activity (which is really problematic when trying to test the motors…) in this draft I’m trying to button up some of the engineering problems with the machine itself. In the MDF prototype there was a ton of slop when the motors were engaged. Got some nice feedback from Tivon & Hughes about modifications including placing rails above the bearings and making the back board a single piece. I’ve also created a spool that integrates a little more into the design. Next redesign will include better housing for the motors (I think they could use some support so they aren’t pulling away from the faceplate…but moving to a rigid material could solve that as well) and perhaps building a rail that sits below the drawing to pull the fishing line taut to the wall as well as a threading mechanism that pulls the line off the spool to the bottom of this piece.
